On March 21, 2022, the City Council approved a professional services agreement to prepare a Memorandum of Findings and to prepare construction plans and bid documents of the 2022 Akin Road Improvement project.  The plans and specifications are complete; the next step is to authorize the Advertisement for Bids.

A Project Location Map is attached; the improvements are on Akin Road from the north side of CR 50 to about 550 feet south of the 195th Street roundabout.

The Memorandum of Findings on the Akin Road Improvement was prepared in mid-May of 2022.   As there were concerns with public safety and having two major roads under construction at the same time (Akin Road and TH 3), as well as construction costs, the project was moved to 2023 construction.  Two changes have also been made to project scope:

• The City funding source was changed to Municipal State Aid construction funds; using these funds requires adhering to State Aid standards and review processes.
•  Reclamation and repaving of the trail on the east side of Akin Road was added to the project.

Plans and specifications for the project have been prepared consistent with the Memorandum of Findings and these two scope changes.  If approved, Staff expects that bids would be opened on April 19, 2023; and a recommendation for contract award would be available for consideration by the City Council on May 1, 2023.

The estimated cost of construction, including a 10% contingency, is $2,404,500; all the construction costs, including the trail work, are eligible for Municipal State Aid Construction funds.  The project will be funded via a combination of Street Maintenance funds and Municipal State Aid Construction funds.  The breakdown will be determined once bids have been received.
